Center activities

Heart Failure Center is dedicated to treating patients with acute and chronic, advanced, heart failure. By combining human, technical and spatial resources, it is possible for patients with heart failure to receive the most modern treatment modalities in one place. The center is the last resort for the examination and treatment of patients with heart failure.
The basis of quality treatment of heart failure is a multidisciplinary and holistic approach. The Center for Heart Failure is purposefully designed to enable optimal and effective application of various treatment modalities, education of the patient and his family and to provide easier access to specialized health services.

Heart Failure Center includes the following organizational units:

  • Medical Review Board
  • Heart Failure Center outpatient unit
  • Department of Cardiac Treatment of Cardiac Insufficiency
  • Department of Cardiac Surgery for Cardiac Insufficiency

List of procedures

Obtaining timely and accurate diagnosis is halfway to success in treating cardiac insufficiency.

Heart Failure Center has at its disposal a complete set of invasive and non- invasive diagnostic procedures:

  • Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography (CT scanner)
  • Echocardiography
  • Ergospirometry
  • Cardiac catheterization with coronary angiography and endomyocardial biopsy

Patients with the most severe forms of cardiac insufficiency are treated in a highly equipped Intensive Care Unit. Cardiologists, anesthesiologists and intensivists of the Center optimize the function of the cardiovascular system and vital organs, and thus prepare patients for continued treatment. Among others, the following treatment modalities are available to them:

  • Short-term percutaneous mechanical circulatory support
  • State-of-the-art cardiovascular intravenous drugs
  • Ultrafiltration

Interventional cardiologists of the Center perform percutaneous heart and blood vessel interventions (without opening the chest), in patients with cardiac insufficiency:

  • Interventions on coronary arteries
  • Interventions on heart valves (aortic and mitral valves)

Cardiac surgeons of the Center operate on patients with cardiac insufficiency and correct structural heart diseases:

  • Myocardial revascularization (bypass surgery)
  • Valvular surgery
  • Surgical left ventricular remodeling
  • Innovative surgical treatments for cardiac insufficiency
  • Installation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD)
  • Installation of a total artificial heart (TAH)
  • Heart transplantation

Instructions for patients

General information:

Heart Failure Center is available to other health care institutions 24/7, 365 days a year. Patients are transferred to this Center from other hospitals, or they arrive through the Center’s outpatient clinic

Outpatient Clinic

The first examinations of patients with heart failure, selection for certain modality of examination and treatment are performed in the Outpatient Clinic of the Heart Failure Center, which also performs periodic monitoring of treated patients. An examination in the Outpatient Clinic within the Center is scheduled by your appointed medical doctor via IHIS system (IHIS referral letter with an appointment date and time). Working hours: The Outpatient Clinic admits patients every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Required documentation: For the outpatient unit examination, patients should prepare the following analyses, not older than 7 days:

  • Complete blood count with leukocytes differential count
  • Biochemical blood tests (electrolytes, kidney function, liver function, coagulation status)
  • BNP or NT-proBNP
